The University of Szeged

The University of Szeged (SZTE) with a history dating back to 1581, is located in the sunniest city of Hungary attracting thousands of young people due to its lively, urban lifestyle and colourful festivals.

Since Hungary is a member of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), it also has EU accreditation. According to QS World University Rankings, SZTE was the best Hungarian university in 2016.

Szeged, Hungary

Szeged is the third-largest city in Hungary, located in the South-East of the country and known as the "city of sunshine" for its brilliant weather (it has the highest number of sunny days throughout the year). It is a city well-known for its imposing catehdral, its wealth of Art Nouveau and historicist buildings, but also for its delicious fish soup (halászlé) which has its own festival in September!

It is hard to name the single thing that makes Szeged such an appealing city. Is it the shady, gardenlike main square with all the park benches or the abundant streetside-cafe seating in a pedestrian area that seems to stretch on forever? Maybe it is the interesting architecture of the palaces in the old town. Then again, it could be the year-round cultural performances and lively university-town vibe. Szeged – a corruption of the Hungarian word sziget (island) – sits astride the Tisza River, with a thermal-bath complex and park opposite the old town.

The city of Szeged is attested since the Roman Empire, where its strategic location was perfect for guard post settlement to guard the gold and salt shipments coming from Dacia. In the 13th century, the settlement advanced to city rank, and become the cultural and economic center of the region. Szeged played an important role in the 15th century in the campaigns led against the Turkish armies. 1879 was the most dramatic date in the city's history, as floods from the Tisza River broke through its dams, destroying 95% of Szeged’s buildings. However, this disaster also led to a great rebirth of Szeged.

Szeged is not only famous for its colorful history, the spice paprika and its interesting sights. The University of Szeged has more than 20 thousand students giving the city a youthful and exciting atmosphere.
